Einstein may have argued that a messy workspace is a sign of a creative mind, I prefer however, an ‘organized mess’. That means lots of things but in an order the way I like it. This includes, greenery, cute stationary and everything on trend. Let’s face it – mess equals stress.
So, to get your desk AND life in check, here are a few ways to upgrade your desk space. A happy space is a happy …. (I can’t find a fitting word that rhymes with space).
Declutter Your Desk
Decluttering is the very first step to upgrading your desk, as per the rules of Marie Kondo(link to her book, here!). If it no longer pertains to what you are doing right now, get rid of it! You don’t need a million post it notes from a month ago nor files of this that don’t mean anything to you anymore. Just let go!
Organize What’s Left
After decluttering, organize what you have at hand. Starting with your laptop files(I swear you feel like an organizational queen!) to the stack of paperwork collecting dust and the useless spam emails that no one really reads. Keep your important items within your eyesight, but not too close too!
Personalize In An Inspiring Way
Personalize your desk in a way that is inspiring, but not distracting!(I find this quite difficult)Adding some flowers, motivational postcards and Instagram worthy stationery can really do the trick during a long day at work.
Create A Ritual
Habits can be very powerful and to maintain a tidy desk, you’ve got to make it a priority. Create an end of the day ritual, what I like to do is that I write down all the tasks I have completed on my work calendar and at the end of everyday I write down what things I need to do on the next day. This really helps me start working in the morning, especially for a forgetful person like myself. Every week I like to also throw away all the pieces of paper I no longer need. Make a habit of creating an organized and productive work environment for yourself!
